Do You Own Your Telegram Bot or Just License It?

A clear answer to a confusing question. What you actually own, what you don't, and what to negotiate when working with a developer or platform.

Bot ownership is layered. Different parts have different owners. Here's the clear breakdown.

What Telegram owns

The platform itself, the API, and the messaging infrastructure. You can't use Telegram outside Telegram.

What you own (when set up correctly)

  • The bot account and its token (via @BotFather).
  • Your custom name, avatar, description, commands.
  • Your conversation data and customer data.
  • Custom code and configs (if your contract specifies).

What your developer might claim

  • Source code (unless contract transfers to you).
  • Hosting and infrastructure (unless under your account).
  • Reusable components and frameworks they built.

What your platform owns

  • The platform itself (you license, not own).
  • Their proprietary workflow engines and processors.
  • UI, dashboard, and management features.

What you should always negotiate for

  1. Full source code with written IP transfer.
  2. Bot token and @BotFather ownership.
  3. Customer data export rights.
  4. Documentation and runbooks.
  5. Right to migrate to another developer or platform.

SaaS platform-specific considerations

  • Read the data export terms before committing.
  • Understand the migration path if you ever leave.
  • Confirm the platform doesn't claim rights over your business data.

The ultimate question

If your developer or platform vanished tomorrow, would you still be able to run your bot? If the answer is no, you don't really own it.
