How to Change the Owner or Admin of Your Telegram Bot
Transferring a Telegram bot — from the @BotFather walk-through to handling team access on your dashboard. The complete guide.
Bots change hands all the time — when employees leave, when companies are acquired, or when you simply outgrow your original setup. Telegram makes ownership transfers possible, but the process has a few sharp edges.
What "ownership" actually means
A Telegram bot is owned by whichever Telegram account created it via @BotFather. There's no concept of "co-owners" at the Telegram level — there is only one owner, plus the people you give dashboard access to.
Transferring bot ownership (Telegram side)
- Open @BotFather in Telegram.
- Send
/mybots, pick the bot. - Choose Transfer Ownership.
- Select the new owner (must be in your contacts and have set a username).
- Confirm the transfer.
Note: Both accounts must have 2FA enabled, and the transfer is irreversible without the new owner's consent.
Changing admins (dashboard side)
If you use a hosted platform like Eavur, you can invite team members with role-based permissions:
- Owner — full control, billing, transfer rights.
- Admin — manage workflows, moderation, team.
- Editor — edit content, can't change billing.
- Viewer — read-only access for analysts or auditors.
Best practices for team transfers
- Document every workflow before handing over.
- Rotate the bot token after a sensitive transfer.
- Audit who else had dashboard access during the previous owner's tenure.
- Update billing details and email contacts immediately.
Common pitfalls
The most painful "bot transfer gone wrong" stories happen when the original owner's Telegram account gets deleted before the transfer completes. Always confirm Telegram-side ownership before off-boarding the prior owner.
