How to Tell If a Telegram Bot Developer Is Reliable
Hiring a freelancer or agency to build your bot? Here are the warning signs to avoid and the green flags to chase.
The Telegram bot ecosystem is full of brilliant builders and total cowboys. Here's how to tell them apart before you wire money.
Green flags
- Live demo bots — they'll DM you a working example to play with.
- Public GitHub or portfolio — code samples or production bots they can reference.
- Verifiable references — real customers willing to talk.
- Clear written scope — milestones, deliverables, costs spelled out before any work.
- Hosting plan — they tell you where the bot will live, what it costs, and who owns it.
Red flags
- "I can build anything" — generic; usually a sign of inexperience.
- No fixed pricing without a brief — fair. But "trust me" is not.
- Refuses written contract — never engage.
- Wants the bot token before signing — major security risk.
- Too cheap — $50 builds rarely deliver business-grade results.
- No post-launch support plan — bots need maintenance.
Questions to ask before hiring
- Show me three bots you've built that are still running.
- What happens if I want to switch developers later?
- Who owns the code, the bot, and the data?
- How will you hand off — what docs and credentials do I get?
- What's included in post-launch support, and for how long?
Contract essentials
- IP ownership transfers to you on final payment.
- NDAs both ways.
- Data processing agreement if customer data is involved.
- Defined milestones with payments tied to deliverables.
- Termination clause with code-handover requirements.
The cheapest developer is rarely the best deal. Pay for someone who'll still be answering your messages in six months.
